ALAIN MOREAU
Dr. Alain Moreau has been appointed Director of the Network for Canadian Oral Health Research (NCOHR) for a three-year term commencing effective October 1st, 2016. Dr. Moreau will play a pivotal leadership role in ensuring the sustainability of the Network, and its’ continued work to increase capacity in and ongoing support for oral health research in Canada.

As an internationally recognized expert in the field of molecular genetics of musculoskeletal diseases, Dr. Alain Moreau is a Full Professor in the Faculty of Dentistry (Stomatology Department), cross-appointed to the Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine Department in the Faculty of Medicine at Université de Montréal. He served as Director of Research and Chief Scientific Officer of Sainte-Justine University Hospital (2013-2016) and was a member and Vice-Chair of the Advisory Board of the Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (2010-2016). Between 2009 and 2012, Dr. Moreau served as co-director of the Dentistry department at Sainte-Justine University Hospital, a first for a non-clinician in more than one hundred years.

Vision for NCOHR
The mandate of NCOHR is broad and goes well beyond dentistry. Oral health is a global priority and encompasses many important pediatric and adult diseases that affect a great number of Canadians. NCOHR is different from other networks because it also covers a unique and long health continuum from fetal development and birth defects, to orphan genetic diseases and chronic diseases involving bone, cartilage, mucosa, muscle, nerves, skin, and the oral microbiome. Oral health research is at the crossroad of many disciplines from nanotechnologies to stem cells and regenerative medicine through new imaging methods and development of innovative devices to improve health. NCOHR will continue actively to exert a strong leadership to support its members by the creation of an innovation pathway through the development of new partnerships with industry and other partners.

NCOHR and its’ affiliated researchers and stakeholders will be encouraged to take a more active role in health prevention, health services and policies, knowledge transfer, and in the development of clinical guidelines. Many Canadian researchers associated with NCOHR are internationally known for their trail-blazing discoveries; however, NCOHR can do more and do better to showcase excellence across the full scope of oral health research, from cell to society, offering a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary learning and exchange. NCOHR members will forge strategic alliances with its’ counterparts worldwide and be part of international research initiatives to position Canadian researchers as leaders in the fields of oral health research and build our research capacity.

Research Interests
Dr. Moreau received his Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from Université de Montréal in 1986, followed by a Master's degree in Applied Microbiology from INRS-Institut-Armand-Frappier/Université du Québec in 1989, and a doctorate in Microbiology and Immunology from Université de Montréal in 1993. He completed a first postdoctoral training at the Protein Engineering Center of University of Liège in Belgium (1992-1993), followed by a second postdoctoral fellowship at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Montreal, and affiliated with McGill University (1997). Dr. Moreau is an internationally recognized expert on molecular genetics of pediatric scoliosis. His discoveries led to multiple peer-reviewed papers, international conferences as a guest speaker, several awards as well as 44 patents covering innovative diagnostic tests and therapeutic molecules. Dr. Moreau's main research interests also target complex adult diseases such as osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and myalgic encephalomyelitis.
