Beyond the Surface: Analyzing Oral Health Data and Outcomes - NCOHR Workshop as part of the Canadian Oral Health Summit 2024
Introduction
A Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) initiative has commenced to enhance dental care for individuals at a higher risk of oral health issues. An essential aspect for consideration is the identification of available data that can be utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of this new oral health care, particularly among populations facing elevated risks, such as seniors, children, individuals with disabilities, Indigenous people, and others. The discussion will delve into the potential of utilizing existing data and employing AI to evaluate the benefits of dental care for individuals at a higher risk. Inequalities and inequities are significant factors contributing to lower oral health, and it is crucial to address issues related to equalities and equities in this context.
Objective
The workshop’s primary emphasis will be on addressing learning strengths, obstacles and potential solutions for analyzing oral health data and outcomes, as well as obtain the appropriate understanding.
Anticipated Outcomes
Learn the potential data sources, strength, obstacles, and possible solutions for improving oral health care data in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the new oral health care planning.
Gain insights focused on reducing barriers for patients and healthcare professionals.
Learn the best methods for combining data and to promote internal validity.
Obtain practical insights aimed at comprehending the impact of the new program on health inequalities and health inequities.
An Advisory Group within NCOHR will be established to address this critical data issue, with a focus on generating relevant valid data, especially among individuals at higher risk.
A white paper summarizing the workshop results and recommended next steps for the oral health research community.

NCOHR Team Connect Development Workshop - Transition from acute to chronic painful temporomandibular disorders: Exploratory paths Workshop
Dr. Ana Velly (McGill University) and Dr. Gilles Lavigne (Université de Montréal) organized two workshops in June 2019.
The aim of the first workshop (Vancouver, B.C.) was to create a new intersectoral team comprising representatives from Canadian institutions to develop new, feasible research approaches to clarify the underlying mechanisms, biomarkers, and risk factors for painful temporomandibular disorders (TMD), and thereby put in place management strategies to prevent the persistence of chronic orofacial pain. The workshop was attended by 74 participants. Most of them were MSc. and Ph.D students, professors and researchers from USA, Canada, Europe (Netherlands, Denmark, UK), Brazil, Japan.
The second workshop (Montreal, QC) gathered together educators, clinicians, students, patient representatives as well as researchers from different disciplines from Canada to discuss the current state of knowledge and research, and to consider future research opportunities and directions related to the transition from acute to chronic painful temporomandibular disorders (TMD).

Applied Mixed Methods in Oral Health Research: Importance and Example of a Training Program
NCOHR Summer Research Institute Program 2015
In late August 2015, Drs. Nicolau, Levine, Castonguay and Pluye organized and taught the 1st McGill Summer Institute in Applied Mixed Methods in Oral Health Research.
In the last decade, there has been a steady increase in the use of mixed methods in health research, including dentistry. This growth in popularity can be seen as a response to the increasing complexity of research problems relating to human health and wellbeing. However, the plurality of mixed methods designs is often difficult to cope with for novice researchers.
The event brought together professors and students from seven Canadian dental schools (UBC, Dalhousie, U Toronto, U Laval, U Montreal, U McGill, U Alberta), as well as from Brazilian and Mexican universities. The evaluations of over twenty participants (22) were very enthusiastic and the group produced a journal article for JDR Clinical & Translational Research .
