Vision and Mission
The vision of NCOHR is to be the primary resource for initiating, supporting, and sustaining innovative and collaborative oral health research designed to benefit the health of all people in Canada.
Central to this vision is the recognition that oral health is fundamental to overall well-being.
Oral health is the healthy condition of your mouth, including your teeth, gums, tongue, and supporting tissues. It lets you eat and speak well and contributes to your comfort and overall quality of life, free from pain and disease.
We are committed to establishing an inclusive network that aligns clinical, research, and academic collaborations and infrastructures within the Canadian health research community.
We will take advantage of our integrative and innovative framework to generate oral health benefits through three strategic aims:
- To foster talent development and enhance the training experience
- To create and support collaborative research teams.
- To mobilize knowledge in emerging fields of science and promising technologies.
Background
Oral health is a major contributor to the overall health and well-being of all people in Canada. Poor nutrition can result from tooth loss and decay, and a number of oral health ailments can seriously reduce one’s overall health or worsen pre-existing conditions. This includes oral cancer, chronic orofacial pain, pulpitis (inflammation), or periodontitis (infection), among other conditions. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has shed light on factors that lead to disparities in oral health outcomes and access to preventative care, such as socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, and disability.
For nearly a decade, the NCOHR has proven its ability to initiate, support, and advance collaborative oral health research. With a well-established infrastructure in place, the NCOHR is ready to advance oral health research and knowledge translation even further.
Working together with scientists, healthcare providers, industry partners, government agents, students, patients and communities, the network endeavours to drive discoveries and reinforce current models to enhance and uphold optimal oral health
The NCOHR promotes excellence in oral health by training the next generation of researchers and clinicians with a strong dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion. As we improve the oral health of all people in Canada, we progress the global health of all.
